“If two speeches and a social-media site was all we needed to spread democracy, why did we invade Iraq? Why didn’t we just, I don’t know, poke them?” — Jon Stewart, host of “The Daily Show,” wades into the debate about what some people see as undue credit being given to Twitter, Facebook and social media amid the uprisings in the Middle East. (See Technology as tools: on Twitter and Tunisia…) Nobody seems to know exactly who coined the term “Twitter revolution” but people are just outraged over it. From a popularly circulated — retweeted, of course — blog post by Ulises A. Mejias, an assistant professor at the State University of New York, College at Oswego, titled “The Twitter Revolution Must Die”: “What we call things, the names we use to identify them, has incredible symbolic power, and I, for one, refuse to associate corporate brands with struggles for human dignity.” Clay Shirky and Malcolm Gladwell disagree about whether social media makes protests possible. Matthew Ingram at GigaOm writes: “In the end, it’s not about Twitter or Facebook: it’s about the power of real-time networked communication.” Meanwhile, the BBC today talks about how dial-up modems, fax machines and ham radio are playing a role in communications in Egypt after the government ordered an Internet shutdown. Preoccupational Hazard

and now i can’t disguise

the writing on your eyes

it’s not from something that i took

it’s just another page in the book

how can you not see?

it’s just too easy

it takes some effort you will find

to try and remain blind

i like to think it’s because it mattered

but i think it’s just a preoccupational hazard

keep it in the box

no matter how long, the truth still talks

wear it on my chest

the unknown motivation i’ve come to detest

how can you not see?

it’s just too easy

it takes some effort you will find

to try and remain blind

i like to think it’s because it mattered

but i think it’s just a preoccupational hazard

if you don’t have your mind you still have a machine

something to tell you the walls were green

and yea you know you’ll end up feeling sore

when you wrap your hands in love and war

Elton John - Rocket Man

And I think it’s gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I’m a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
