Jay-Z In His Own Words
Occupy Wall Street has spent one year on the streets organizing for exactly the things
Jay rapped about in his early days: Ending racism, urban poverty, income inequality,
the use of lethal force (Stop and Frisk) and returning dignity and hope to the everyday
people of New York City.
These are civil rights issues that we know Jay-Z supports and Occupy does too. We
would love him to recognize that we’re all in this together not only on these issues but
the broader ones of money, corruption and the failure of democracy that affects all
communities.
JAY-Z’S ISSUES ARE OCCUPY’S ISSUES
STOP AND FRISK / INSTITUTIONAL RACISM:
- “So I pull over to the side of the road and I heard, “Son do you know
why I’m stopping you for?” Cause I’m young and I’m black and my
hat’s real low.” — 99 Problems, The Black Album
- “My neighborhood is crime central, where cops lock you up more
than try to defend you.” — Can I Live II, Reasonable Doubt
- “D.A. tried to give the nigga the shaft again. Half-a-mil for bail cause
I’m African… So pardon my disposition, why should I listen to a
system that never listened to me?” — 99 Problems, The Black Album» In 2011, NYPD officers conducted 685,724 street stops.
